We are responsible for funding and regulating the tertiary education sector in Wales including further education (FE), higher education (HE), including research and innovation, apprenticeships, adult community learning, and local authority maintained school sixth forms.
On 1 August 2024 we took over the full range of duties from the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW), and a range of functions from the Welsh Government relating to tertiary education.

Student Finance Wales Student finance in further educationWe have 11 strategic duties, and we are developing our first strategic plan.
Our prioritiesWe regulate fee levels, ensure a framework is in place for assessing the quality of higher education, and scrutinise the performance of tertiary education providers.
RegulationA key priority for Medr is to promote tertiary education through the medium of Welsh.
Welsh languageWe must assess, or make arrangements to assess, the quality of education by or on behalf of regulated providers. We must also monitor, and promote improvement in the quality of tertiary education.
QualityWe aim to promote a dynamic and sustainable research base within higher education institutions.
Research and innovationWe develop policies in a range of areas and encourage providers to meet the Welsh Government’s priorities in these areas.
For learning providersWe fund tertiary education and research, including school sixth forms, apprenticeships, further education, higher education, and research and innovation.
Funding for providersWe need to be confident that the providers we fund are being run as efficiently and effectively as possible to safeguard public funds.
Monitoring and complianceInformation from tertiary education providers is used to calculate funding allocations, monitor progress, inform policy, and publish statistics on the tertiary sector.
